Brilliant –
20 Ft Wooden Gaff Cutter 1970
Built
By Percy Mitchell
‘Brilliant’ is a clinker-built gaff cutter, mahogany on oak, and well maintained by the present owner who has had her for 26 years. She had a complete refit by John Moore & Son of Mevagissey between 2002-4. The refit included new decks, bulkheads, coach roof in teak, rigging, stays and foresail. A new Beta marine engine was fitted in 2003 and has had little running time. ‘Brilliant’ is a pretty boat with a good pedigree and is in good condition. She is similar to the popular Shrimper but, as a traditional wooden equivalent, is available at a fraction of the cost at £11,250. A trailer, new in 2003, is also available subject to a sensible offer.
Percy Mitchell was an exceptional and highly respected Cornish Boat builder. He built a wide array of wooden craft and, according to Dr Claud Worth (the eminent yacht designer), “an artist in wood” He took over his employer’s yard in Mevagissey in his twenties and later moved the yard to Portmellon for easier launching. During World War II he built motor cutters and MVF boats for the Admiralty. After the war his boats were in great demand; one of his most famous builds being the 28 ton ‘Windstar’ which the late King George V often sailed on, as did Princess Elizabeth, now Queen.
‘Brilliant’ is available for inspection on the Roseland peninsular.

Lucky 1
Lucky 1 is an Alan Buchanan-designed day boat called a Blackwater 14’. A local man of St. Just-in-Roseland commissioned Alan Buchanan to design the boat for sailing in the Fal estuary. All the Blackwaters were made by Pasco’s boatyard at St. Just around the 1960’s.
Bermudan rig, drop galv c/plate, sails hardly used, 3.5 HP outboard. A solid sturdy day sailer, ideal for a family to enjoy all the magic of the creeks and beaches of the Fal.
This boat, I am advised by the man who built her, has been little used over the years.
She is available by appointment for inspection at St. Just-in-Roseland.
Offers over £1,000.
